Places to visit near the castle of San George

  • Lisbon Cathedral. The Santa Maria Maior church in Lisbon, known as the Cathedral of Lisbon, is the oldest church in this city, since the beginning of its construction dates back to 1147. Like many Portuguese buildings, this building suffered historical events and earthquakes that resulted in successive modifications and reforms, until now: a combination of different styles. The cathedral is very close to the San Jorge Castle, just 10 minutes away on foot.
  • Plaza del Comercio After only a 15-minute walk, from San Jorge Castle, you can reach one of the central points of Lisbon: Plaza del Comercio. Also known as "Terreiro do Paço", it is the place where formerly the Royal Palace of the city was located. It is surrounded with picturesque buildings with vibrant yellow tones and one of its sides borders the Tagus River, which makes it a key point to enjoy the landscape.
  • Arch of Rua Augusta. In the beautiful Plaza del Comercio, in the heart of Lisbon, there is a large white arch that, from the Rua Augusta, frames the Tagus River and, from the square, frames the beautiful Rua Augusta. This arch was built in 1873, according to the design of the architect Veríssimo José da Costa, but was not completed until 1875. The arch has several allegorical sculptures representing the Gloria, the Supreme Genius and the Valor and the historical figures Nuno Álvares Pereira , Viriato, Vasco da Gama, and the Marquis of Pombal.
  • Santa Justa Elevator. Walking along Rua Augusta from Plaza del Comercio, at one point you will see a beautiful 45 meter high iron elevator in neo-Gothic style. It is the Santa Justa Elevator, or Carmo Elevator. This artifact from the early 1900 links the area of Baixa Pombalina and Chiado. It was designed by Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard. While originally working with steam, electric motors were installed later. It is an unmissable point of interest during your stay in Lisbon.
  • Roman Galleries. It is an ancient architectural structure of vaulted corridors under the Rua da Prata street from the time of the Roman occupation of the city, during the government of Emperor Augustus (1st century BC to 1st century AD)
  • **Fado Museum.**If you enjoyed the music that was being played during a dinner out, with its sad voices and stringed instruments, then you will be interested to visit the Fado Museum, where you can learn all about this musical genre, from the instruments to the technique of playing Portuguese guitar and viola.

How to get to the castle of San Jorge

From Lisbon airport, take bus 708 in Praça do Aeroporto to Martim Moniz, and get off at the last stop. The trip takes approximately 20 minutes. When you get off the bus, you will find yourself at the foot of the castle. But do not be fooled by appearances! Climbing the fortress is not as easy and fast as it seems. A walk of about twenty minutes awaits you to get to the top.
If you arrive in Lisbon by train, you will be in a privileged position to climb the castle. You can take a taxi (which will take about ten minutes) or take a walk through the historic district of Lisbon and over the hill of the castle (approximately 20 minutes).
