FUNCHAL.The discoverers called the capital of Madeira Funchal, because of the sweet liquorice perfume of the fennel wild grass, called "funcho" in Portuguese. Funchal has a lot of attractions for the tourist: the Cathedral, the first one to be built in one of the Portuguese colonies, the Palace of Sao Lourenço, also known as the Palace of the Governor, the Museum of Holy Art. In the old city, traditionally called the fisherman’s area, you can find the Lavradores Market, the main market of the city and a very typical one. The airport is situated 23 km away from the centre. All the cities and villages are accessible by bus and a public ferry service connects Funchal and Porto Santo.
