A number of years ago it turned out into a major residential area and became later on very popular. From De Waterkant you can walk to the city centre easily; the V&A Waterfront and the Table Mountain cableway are a quick drive away and the fashionable Atlantic beaches and trendy Atlantic seaboard suburbs are also very close.
This area has nowadays developed into a major tourism destination where most of these houses are now self-catering, Guest House or Bed & Breakfast establishments for the international tourist. The Village of De Waterkant is essentially a business area during the day, where people regularly live, work, lunch and shop, while by night it offers some of the city’s best restaurants, wine bars and clubs.

NEW CUMBERLAND

Om: MOUILLE POINT. Located between the V & A Waterfront and Sea Point, Mouille Point is full of apartments overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Robben Island and Lions Head. The promenade stretches along the beachfront is great for rollerblading, jogging or a sunset stroll.The lighthouse, which was the first lighthouse in South Africa, built in 1924 is still operational and can be visited during the week.You will need to head to the Waterfront or Sea Point for most shops although there is lots of petrol station with convenience store, a pharmacy and liquor store on Beach Road. There are a number of fine restaurants located on Beach Road, all with great views over the sea and Robben Island. There are no beaches in Mouille Point. Your closest bit of sand is just along the road in Sea Point.
