Leipzig District Source

  • KNAUTKLEEBERG. Knautkleeberg, together with Knautnaundorf and Knauthain since 1930 forms a part of the district southwest of Leipzig and is at the bank of the “Weisse Elster”, about 10km south of the city centre. In this area there are two lakes: “Elster-Stausee” and “Cospudener See”, where you can go swimming, fishing, walking or simply relax. A supermarket, a bank and a doctor are also nearby. By car or tram you can reach the city centre of Leipzig in about 20 minutes. Leipzig is also very well served by public transport such as regional train, bus and tram.
  • 06-ZENTRUM NORD. The centre north is a part of the city district “Mitte” of Leipzig, where you can reach everything by foot. Outside of Germany, Leipzig is best known for the Leipzig Fair, and as one of the oldest exhibition places in the world. The first exhibition took place here in 1190. The most important Fairs here are the Leipzig Book Fair and the International Automobile. Furthermore, the University of Leipzig, founded in 1409, is the second oldest university in Germany. The opera house also has a long tradition that goes back 300 years and is the third oldest opera in Europe. The centre has many interesting museums. The main railway station in this district is a hub of public transport, and it is one of the biggest main train stations in Europe (with 150,000 travellers passing through here daily). Leipzig has a dense network of public transport service in the whole city with trams, regional trains and bus lines.
  • 00-ZENTRUM. The centre of the fairs-city Leipzig belongs to the district “Mitte”, with many shops, cafes and restaurants. You will find a lot of historical buildings from the last centuries (most of them in Baroque style, pre and post-war period), together with numerous squares with beautiful fountains (for example “Mendebrunnen“). The largest square in the district the “Augustus Platz”, where is also located the opera house, which is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Germany.
    There are furthermore a lot of churches, some of them built in the XV century Gothic style. In the heart of Leipzig you can visit the old City Hall (Renaissance building from the year 1557), the imperial court building, the old stock exchange, many bars, restaurants and cafés. The symbol of the city is the international monument of the Leipzig Battle of 1813. The centre disposes of a very good network of trams, S-Bahn and bus lines.
  • 23-SELLERHAUSEN-STÜNZ. Sellerhausen-Stünz is the quarter 23 in District Eastern of Leipzig, and is about 3 km in the east of city centre. This is a very green area of the city, but it is only about 8 minutes with the tram to arrive at main railway station and the city centre of Leipzig. There is throughout the city many beautiful buildings in the Art Nouveau, as well as numerous museums and historic buildings. To go for a nice dinner, entertainment and nightlife is mainly offered in the inner city. Leipzig is famous as one of the oldest fairs cities in the world (the first exhibition was in 1190). A nice excursion you will have in the green area of the Zoological Garden, with its approximately 900 species of animals from all over the world, which is situated in northwest of the city. Leipzig has an excellent network of public transports (trams, buses and trains).
  • WACHAU. Wachau District is located about 8 kilometres in the southern part of Leipzig, on the eastern side of Markkleeberger Lake which takes part of the so-called “Leipziger Neuseeland”. You can explore the area enjoying the promenade next to the lake, where you can also canoeing or find numerous restaurants or car parks.Very important for the local history was the 1813 Wachau-Leipzig battle, which is celebrated every year in October with ancient historical uniform and parades. You can also visit the neo-gothic Church of Wachau built in 1865/67 and find a large shopping centre and several restaurants. You can reach the city centre of Leipzig catching the A38 and B186 roads or by the public bus service.
