Hollywood’s fallen stars
Since the “star-system” has existed in Hollywood, the success, fame and money involved have always been matched by a dark and disappointing side. And in a way, Hollywood’s biggest stars have been idolized not only because they represent a lifestyle full of “accomplishments” and splendour, but also because through these fairy tales-whether in film or real life – they also live sad tragedies.
The list of woes is Hollywood is endless. Beginning with the always enigmatic Greta Garbo, who suffered from depression and left the cinema forever when she was just 36 years old, or the mysterious death of Marilyn Monroe, who committed suicide after years of addiction to the pills and living the tragic clash between her beauty and intelligence. But the sinister exploits of the rich and famous today, perhaps less glamorous than those of yesteryear, give an example of a totally corrupt entertainment industry. The exploitation of the personal lives of stars is intrinsically tied to ticket sales because, as we know, bad publicity is good advertising.
One famous fallen star is Lindsay Lohan, who began her career as an actress in childhood in Disney movies, and who in recent years made headlines for his public missteps, which hit at the box office. Being sentenced to 90 days in jail for driving while intoxicated is a dubious “milestone” in what has been a very rocky past few years. And with each new event in their miserable and exhausting battle to be happy, the media pounces on stars like vultures, gutting what little remains of their dignity. In the case of Lindsay, for example, even her own parents have been able to take advantage of their daughter’s sordid life and public appearances for their own fame-mongering.
Mischa Barton, Lindsay’s contemporary, is another public figure whose only role is apparently that of little girl lost in her own life. After many successful appearances in television series, Mischa could not find her place in Hollywood. The press only considered her worthwhile when seeing her face contorted by alcohol, or when it came to light that she had been admitted a clinic for mental problems. Hollywood is a wicked mother, who gives birth to stars and fosters them, while waiting for the perfect moment to eat them alive.
