Latex female condoms: a dramatic improvement

Despite more than twenty years on the market, the female condom remains an elusive gem. Its use has not been disseminated as much as the male condom, despite offering several benefits. The fact that it can be inserted up to eight hours before intercourse gives you lots of freedom and means you can “enjoy the moment”. There are some cultural barriers related to safe sex and it seems that the fact that it is the women who decides to protect herself is one of the more complex barriers to more widespread use of the female condom. However, there are other more practical reasons why many women haven’t turned into big fans of the female condom.

Latex female condoms

One of the main drawbacks of the female condom, perhaps why many women preferred to ignore it, is its price (generally three times more expensive than male condoms, not to mention that the latter are available free at most health centres). In addition to costing more, the polyurethane material is noisy, which, although it can be good for laughs, is not exactly what we want to hear during sex. This type of female condom might be a good option if you have latex allergies, but thankfully it is no longer the only option.

While it is true that, precisely because of their lower market penetration, there is less variety as far as design is concerned. But little by little this highly effective method for preventing sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy has evolved to correct some of these imperfections, which while not compromising their efficacy, did have us reaching for other methods to practice safe sex.

Howevever, the new female condom called wow (“worn .of. woman”), marketed in South Africa and England since 2004 and FDA approved this past year, are made of latex and, better yet, have an anatomically significant transformation: the sponge down the road.

Traditional female condoms have a ring which must inserted into the vagina, while the newest version has a more comfortable sponge that acts as an anchor to keep the condom in place. In addition, the outer ring of the wow is not round, but rhomboid, which corresponds better to the shape of the vaginal lips. With these changes, the female condom becomes easier and more pleasant to use, which seems to be a main goal of the company’s products (they also designed the famous Inspiral, a condom with more space for the glans). Have you tried the traditional female condom? What about latex? Which do you prefer? Talking and writing about this makes the issue more visible so that more people can enjoy these methods, which ultimately empower women to enjoy their sexuality.

Rent apartments in Seville and visit the historic condom store “Hygiene,” which has been open since 1932, to request the new latex female condoms and join the ranks of couples who enjoy this great invention, which makes safe sex more comfortable.
