Summer in the Southern Hemisphere: Brazil, Argentina and Australia

Although the summer in the southern hemisphere officially starts in mid December, October and November (Spring) come with nice warm breezes on the other side of the world. There are so many wonderful places in the southern hemisphere to write about, but in this post we’ll focus on Australia, Argentina and Brazil: three giant countries that become specially attractive as the summer comes.

Iguazu Falls: Brazil and Argentina

The falls are nothing but stunning layers of water that rapidly fall into a huge bottomless crater located on the border between Argentina and Brazil. The Devil´s Throat on the Argentine side, which looks like the world´s farthest place, is especially impressive. If you happen to be around during the summer, you’ll actually see much more wild animals than any other time of the year; the sun invites more than 450 species of birds (magpies, toucans, parrots, etc.), mammals (monkeys, cats, coatis and endangered animals such as the jaguar) to parade just before your eyes.

Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches, Rio de Janeiro

In summer, these two Brazilian famous beaches come alive and get full of fit and beautiful people. Walking around these beaches may even be harmful to our health, as it is very usual to sunbathe while drinking many caipirinhas at one of the dozens of bars located right on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. If Copacabana is the coolest Beach to visit in Rio, Ipanema is not far behind. That was the place where the famous song “Garota de Ipanema” was composed.

In these cities it is common to see people wearing swimsuits while walking on the street, however it is curious that despite the summer heat, people wear Santa hats, scarves, socks or white beards.

Perito Moreno Glacier

The best time of year to go to La Patagonia Argentina is precisely now as the summer approaches in the southern hemisphere. Be aware that if you decide to come in winter, you’ll have to bear with the extremely low temperatures that characterize this huge glacier of the Santa Cruz Province. They call it the Cathedral of Ice, which is a perfect place for nature lovers. If you come in the coming months, you’ll most likely see how blue ice falls down to the ocean; It is a one of the best natural wonders that just few can actually witness.

Sydney

Thanks to its subtropical weather, Sydney summers are mild and winters are cold . Despite being the largest and most populous city of Australia, it is very welcoming and encourages its visitors to get interested in its culture. One of the main attractions of the city is the Sydney Opera House by the Danish architect Jorn Utzon, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007. At the Opera you’ll be able to watch live performances including ballet and musical productions from different countries. Don’t forget to hire a cruise on Sydney Harbour, it is a great activity to do with family and friends; some cruise even include dinner and drinks. Boats leave from Port Jackson, which actually is the largest natural harbor in the world.
