ROSSIO. The Square D. Pedro IV, better known for its old name, Rossio, has constituted the heart of Lisbon for six centuries. It’s situated in the area of the “Baixa Pombalina”, which was totally reconstructed, following the project of “Marquês de Pombal”, after the earthquake that seriously damaged Lisbon in 1755. Today its “pombalinos” buildings are occupied by shops, jewellers and cafes. In the north side of the square you’ll find the National Theatre D. Maria II and in the east side, the Carmo Convent (Archaeological Museum of the Carmo), next to the hill of the Castle of São Jorge (Saint George). This area is very well served by public transport (underground, train, bus, tramway), is ideal in order to discover the historical centre of Lisbon (Praça do Comércio, Alfama, Avenida da Liberdade, etc.) or any other area of tourist interest in the capital. The charming train station of Rossio, which deserves to be visited, connects with the line of Sintra.
