06-ZENTRUM NORD. The centre north is a part of the city district “Mitte” of Leipzig, where you can reach everything by foot. Outside of Germany, Leipzig is best known for the Leipzig Fair, and as one of the oldest exhibition places in the world. The first exhibition took place here in 1190. The most important Fairs here are the Leipzig Book Fair and the International Automobile. Furthermore, the University of Leipzig, founded in 1409, is the second oldest university in Germany. The opera house also has a long tradition that goes back 300 years and is the third oldest opera in Europe. The centre has many interesting museums. The main railway station in this district is a hub of public transport, and it is one of the biggest main train stations in Europe (with 150,000 travellers passing through here daily). Leipzig has a dense network of public transport service in the whole city with trams, regional trains and bus lines.
