CHANIA. Chania is a province in the western part of Crete. The city of Chania with its Venetian harbour and the lighthouse, is the second biggest city, and it was until 1971 the island''s capital. To the east, in Souda Bay, there is the large port with ferries arriving from Athens.The airport is in the Akrotiri peninsula and in Georgioupoli there is the lake "Kournas", the only one with freshwater.
In the centre of the island you can find the "Lefka Ori" (White Mountains) from which several canyons descend to the sea (for example the "Imbros"). The most famous and one of the longest in Europe (13 km) is the "Samaria-Gorge". At its end you will reach Agia Roumeli, a small village, from where you can only continue the trip by boat.
The ship will bring you to Chora Sfakion, where there are buses to Chania, but also you can access by boat the small island of Gavdos (the most southern point of Europe) which is 36 km south. Also Frangokastello with its castle deserves a visit.
