8-SCHWANTHALERHÖHE. Schwanthalerhöhe is a quarter of the 8th District of Munich, and is located in the western part of the city centre, therefore it is called “Westend”. This quarter received its name “Schwanthalerhöhe” from the sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler, the creator of Bavaria. Interesting places in this district are: the brick building of “Augustiner-Bräu“(the oldest brewery of Munich), the bridge “Hackerbrücke”, the Bavaria Park, and a whole series of smaller places, which gives the quarter its special character. Following the change of the Munich fair to the quarter “Riem” in February 1998, new apartments, restaurants and shops were built on the old fair grounds. In the remaining fair halls (protected monuments), was opened in May 2003 as a branch of the German Traffic Museum. The good transport connections (two subway lines, S-Bahn Train), the central location and the urban flair make the District an increasingly popular residential area.
