A few steps from Museumplein (Museum Square, in Spanish) and only two hundred meters from the warm and green Vondelpark, the Van Gogh Museum houses the largest collection of pieces of art by one of the most renowned painters of the history of art: Vincent van Gogh. The museum has a permanent collection of more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings and more than 750 letters, as well as temporary exhibitions and artistic, and cultural activities that are carried out continuously.
The museum not only has works by the emblematic painter, famous for his madness, poverty, dramatic life, and disruptive style, but also works by other artists from the nineteenth century, especially those who belonged to the Impressionist and Post-impressionist movement. Thus, you can see sculptures by Auguste Rodin, and paintings by Paul Gauguin, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, among many others.
The van Gogh Museum is one of the key points in Amsterdam's southern area, close to other iconic sites in the city, such as the Stedelijk Museum, the Rijksmuseum Museum, and the Concertgebouw concert hall. Established in 1973, it includes two buildings created by the architects Gerrit Rietveld and Kisho Kurokawa. The buildings were specially designed to house this institution. This incredible collection is the largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh that exists, and it was created with the paintings that the artist had before he died. All of his works were inherited by his brother Theo after he died at the age of 37 in a confusing episode with a firearm, in 1890. Finally, the paintings were exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, where they remained for many years, until they were transferred to the van Gogh Foundation in 1962.

Take the bus from the Amsterdam-Schiphol airport, and you will get there in just half an hour. You must take the bus number 397, and get off at Museumplein.
It can be reached from Amsterdam Central Train Station in about 25 minutes, if you take both the tram number 2 (to Nieuw Sloten, Van Baerlestraat stop), and the tram number 5 (to Amstelveen Binnenhof, Van Baerlestraat stop). You can also get there by bus, just take the bus number 170, to Uithoorn, Amstelplein; or the bus number 172, to Kudelstaart, and get off at Rijksmuseum / Museumplein.
We remind you that the museum is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on Fridays, when the museum opens until 9:00 p.m.
