Home to the largest fishing fleet in Europe, Vigo is an important cog in the commerce wheel of Spain, but there are also lots of hiking routes, numerous nooks and crannies tucked away in the modern part of the city, and the Praza de Compostela, a lush green space that languishes just outside the city centre. Coastal Views and Paradise Islands - Things to do in Vigo

  • Cies Islands -- Sitting off the coast of Pontevedra in Galicia near the picturesque mouth of the Ria de Vigo, this beautiful archipelago is home to some paradisiacal views, with sprawling white sand beaches, impossibly blue waters, and lush green hills that jut skywards. As well as incredible natural scenery, they are also home to some historic monuments and charming snippets of authentic Spanish life.
  • Castro Fortress -- Built back in 1665 during a bloody war, this fortress was erected to protect Vigo from attack from Portugal and British navy allies. It is an important part of the city's history and remains a popular tourist attraction.
  • Praia de Samil -- Vigo's most prominent stretch of beach is a sight to behold, with wide swathes of golden sand stretching out into crystal clear waters. In the background, green mountains rise up against the blue sky, offering an impressive silhouette to sunbathe and swim against. To the west of the beach, the river Lagares folds out into the ocean and it has been named an area of exceptional beauty. Just off the coast you can catch a glimpse of the Cies Islands basking out at sea.
  • Rias Baixas -- Bringing together the Ria de Muros y Noia, the Ria de Arousa, the Ria de Pontevedra, and the Ria de Vigo, this series of estuarine inlets is a beautiful part of the coastline in Galicia and offers incredible views of coves, beaches, and the ocean beyond.
  • Museum of Contemporary Art, Vigo -- This art museum is home to a collection of exhibitions throughout the year, documenting Spanish contemporary art as well as creative pieces from further afield. The building itself was built back in the 19th century and was originally intended to be used as a prison before it became the home of Vigo's art.
  • Balaidos -- Sports lovers will enjoy a visit to Balaidos, a football stadium that is the home ground of La Liga club Celta Vigo. Numerous sporting events take place throughout the year here, as well as large concerts and festivals.

Discover the Rich Culture and History of Vigo

Though it's predominantly known as a fishing port, Vigo in fact harbours a lot of culture throughout the winding streets of its old town and the meandering laneways of the modern part of the city. If you're on the hunt for some culture, you won't be left disappointed thanks to the collection of museums and historic monuments.

The Museo Quinones de Leon celebrates the historic art and archaeology of the region. Set inside an incredible 17th century palace in the heart of the Parque de Castrelos, it showcases documents, artefacts, and age-old artworks that have played a major part in Vigo's past.

For a taste of Vigo's beautiful architecture, head to the Igrexa de Santa Maria, an impressive church that takes pride of place in the centre of the old town. It was built back in 1816 after its predecessor, a display of Romanesque design, was burnt down by Sir Francis Drake.

If you're looking to learn more about Vigo's role as an important fishing port, head to the Museo do Mar which sits of the coast of the city. Here you can explore the timeline of the city's naval and seafaring history, as well as check out the small aquarium and other quirky objects.

Check into one of our Vigo apartments, which allow you to really get under the skin of the city's cultural personality.
