The best of Amsterdam

The Netherlands has a lot of its territory under water and Amsterdam is no exception to that; the city has beautiful canals where to sail and walk around them, a relaxing way to see the city. In the more central ones you can find the famous Red Light District and the many coffee shops. When it comes to art, Dutch artists have been amongst the best in art history and the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum have most of their works exhibited. Culture-wise, the Anne Frank House is also a must-see for all history lovers. Dam Square is also an essential landmark, which houses the Wax Museum and the new church, Nieuwe Kerk, which is a stone’s throw from the old church Oude Kerk. The Heineken Museum is also a fun place to visit for those who want to discover the history of this brewery and have a few cheeky free ones, to then walk them off in Vondelpark and its Zoo or the Flower Market.

Amsterdam districts

Amsterdam is a city that fans out from the top, with its old town being the nucleus. Around it is the Canal Ring, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO due to its beauty, as well as being a hot spot for nightlife. Next to it is the Jordaan, a trendy and alternative district with many restaurants, cafes and art galleries as well as designer boutiques. At the other side is the Plantage, a green area that stands out for its gardens and green areas. South of the last canal are the districts of West, Zuid and Oost, residential areas with quiet streets, perfect to rent cheap apartments in Amsterdam outside the city centre hustle.

When to come to Amsterdam

Amsterdam has an oceanic climate, with relatively mild summers and winters. Rain is present all year long, especially in the latter half. However, its mild climate allows for visitors to come to the city all year long without worrying about weather impediments.

Getting around Amsterdam

One word: bicycle. This is the method of transport par excellence in the city, used by all locals. For those who don’t fancy pedalling too much during their holidays in Amsterdam can always use the city’s tram network, fast and comfortable, although the city is small enough to be able to see by foot. To get to the city you can arrive by train at Centraal Station or by plane from anywhere in the world to Schiphol Airport.

Festivals in Amsterdam

April 30th is Queen’s Day, when Amsterdam goes all orange and celebrates its national day with parties all over the city. In July, Amsterdam celebrates the Roots Festival, presenting culture from outside of Europe with concerts and cultural events, whilst November is time for the Cannabis Cup, five days of partying and hedonistic fun..
